Launching a Directory From the Ground Up: Why I Built Ukrainian Pages

By Vasil Klimko · October 28, 2026 · 3 min read

This month I launched ukrainianpages.com, a Ukrainian business directory for Ukrainian-owned and Ukrainian-serving businesses. After 25 years of helping other companies grow, I wanted to do something I rarely get to do in client work: start with nothing and document every step in public. This is the first article in that series.

Why a directory, and why now

The idea came from a simple observation. Ukrainian businesses are everywhere: accountants, contractors, restaurants, lawyers, shops, and online brands. But finding them is hard.

The information exists, but it is scattered. Some of it lives on Facebook pages, some inside Facebook groups where a useful post gets buried within days, some on Instagram profiles, and some on individual business websites. There is no single place where it is collected, organized, and kept up to date. To find a Ukrainian dentist, contractor, or accountant, you often have to know the right group, search it with the right words, scroll past outdated posts, and hope the business details are still current.

That fragmentation is the core problem. Facebook groups are great communities but poor directories: search inside them is limited, posts disappear down the feed, and nothing is structured by category, service, or location. Instagram profiles show the work but rarely carry the essentials a customer needs, like full contact details, hours, or the range of services. And a business website only helps if you already know that business exists. Each channel holds a fragment of the picture, and none of them connect.

A directory solves a real problem for two sides at once. Visitors find trusted businesses faster because everything is organized in one place: categories, locations, services, contact details, and current information instead of a two-year-old post. Businesses get a place to be discovered by a community that actively wants to choose them, without shouting into a noisy feed. That two-sided value is what makes directories hard to start and powerful once they work.

There is also a personal reason. I wanted a live project where I could test the same AI-assisted growth systems I recommend to clients, with my own time and money on the line. Advice is easier to trust when it has been tested.
